PERISTIL (1-minute walk from hotel)

A perfect spot to take in all the details of this ancient heritage site, both while having a morning coffee or an evening glass of wine on the steps surrounding Peristil square. Today, thanks to its unusually great acoustics and amazing scenery with the bell tower, cathedral, granite columns and 3500 years old and perfectly preserved Egyptian sphinx, Peristil square hosts many opera classics, theatre performances, and concerts. Peristil is the central square in front of St. Domnius’ cathedral in Split, at the intersection of two main streets of the Diocletian’s Palace. The emperor Diocletian spoke to his servants from the upper part of the square, while the lower part lead (and still leads) to the cellars. This square separated the northern part, intended for the servants, from the southern part, intended for the Emperor and his family.
